Since he came to power, his peak approval was 47.8%, which he reached days after his inauguration as president in January 2017, when Americans were still waiting to what actions the new government would take. In his first year in office, Trump became the least popular president in history, with an average popularity level of 39% according to Gallup and data collected by the Associated Press.

Approval ratings of previous presidents

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Jimmy Carter had the lowest approval among these presidents, with barely 28% in months before the Democrat left the White House, due to his management of the Iranian hostage crisis. Carter had earlier enjoyed a 75% approval at the start of his administration.
