Since he came to power, his peak approval was 47.8%, which he reached days after his inauguration as president in January 2017, when Americans were still waiting to what actions the new government would take. In his first year in office, Trump became the least popular president in history, with an average popularity level of 39% according to Gallup and data collected by the Associated Press.

The approval data of the other 12 presidents come from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University and have been taken from national probability-based surveys conducted with live interviewers.
